HISTORY OF BANDRA COMMUNITY
As every person has his/her own back ground the community too has it’s specific background, as it is said “History is filled with people who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their own vision” Thus we are proud to mention the history of our Bandra community which has an authentic back ground.
“Dream, Dream, Dream! Dreams transform into thoughts. And thoughts result in action.” These words are spoken by one of the great personalities of India that is none other than Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. Sr. Emmanuela has proved it through her very life. As she was a young daring and dynamicperson, stepped out of Italy in 1971 February, and reached India (Bombay). She is one of the first pioneers of our Congregation in India who underwent innumerable struggles to start a community in Bombay.
“It takes courage to push yourself to places that you have never been before; to trust your limits; to break through barriers.” Yes, not knowing people, place and the language Sr. Emmanuela entered Bombay with great vision and determination on 29th June 1971. She stayed with the daughters of St. Paul for three months and made her final profession under the guidance of the then Superior Sr. Albina.
On 1st October1971 Mother Luiza along with Sr. Emmanuela met late Rt. Rev. Longinus Pereira and requested for the shelter. God has been so merciful to us through various people, Bishop had granted permission to stay in pastoral center with the monthly payment of Rs 120/- per month.
“Every community, a part of the church consists of a group of sisters gathered in the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”(CF. LG.4). On 15th October 1971 the first community began in the pastoral center with the members, sister Maria Luisa Scovazzi as superior , Sr Emmanuela SrLucy, Sr Guilia Sr.Annie Elamthuruthil, Maria Theresa, Unfortunately some of them left congregation having failed to face the realities of the times.
Sr. Lucy being the nurse started to work in Holy Spirit Hospital Andheri, where she was paid Rs 150/- per month. In earlier times our sisters had to sustain themselves and live only with meager meals. There is a famous saying that goes thus, “Aim at the stars and you will reach the tree top.” Our pioneers aimed at the stars with hope and determination underwent humiliations and insults for the Kingdom of God and finally could reach the stars.
In January 1972 Sr. Angela from Italy joined the community for almost two years and went back to Italy due to some difficulties with regard to her Visa.
On 15th October 1972 there was a great sense of joy in our sisters as they were sheltered just in front of the Mount Mary Basilica. Mary of the Mount has been the guide and support to our sisters right from the beginning.
In October 1972, Bishop Longius Pereira also gave us the permission to start a hostel for the low-income working girls and we began the hostel with 15 girls with the payment of Rs.120/- per month. The girls were given not only mere food and shelter but also treated with great care prudence and were given moral and spiritual assistance.
On 12th December 1972 Sister Flaviana and Sr Ida returned to India and joined the community.
From 1973 to 1976 all ten Indian sisters who were in Italy came back to India to continue the mission.
In order to continue the Charism of Venerable Don Rubino we have started a hostel for poor class working women with minimum payment and this activity is continues till now. we are also engaged in the pastoral activities. Our services in Mumbai is not end in itself. But it goes on and on with zeal and enthusiasm.
Thanks to all the pioneers especially to Sr. Emmanuela who turned weakness into strength, obstacles into stepping-stones and disaster into triumph. Of course the services of all other sisters who were members of this community will never been forgotten.
